The cash-strapped Mysuru City Corporation is looking to absorb its revenue and plans to incorporate areas beyond the corporation’s boundaries into its property tax network, given that the city is developing beyond borders with many real estate operators. Mysuru City Corporation is looking at the Bengaluru model where the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has the “Register A” and “Register B” system (AKhata and BKhata) for properties within the city limits of Bengaluru and for properties at- beyond the city limits.
A group of executives and officials led by Deputy Mayor Anwar Baig visited the BBMP on Saturday to learn about the initiative to collect property tax from landowners.
The “B-Khata” property tax (register B) is applicable for properties located outside the jurisdiction of the BBMP. The Khata concept was born after the BBMP decided to streamline the tax collection process in 2007.
Most of the buildings, that were made before 2007 failed to accommodates BBMP’s laws and therefore were thought of unlawful. These properties did not pay taxes despite enjoying all civic amenities from BBMP. The ‘B-Khata’ land tax was introduced to incorporate such properties within the tax net.
